Haiti needs help – from everyone who can assist

The earthquake which devastated Port-au-Prince, Haiti has brought focus to one of the world’s poorest countries. Our hearts go out to the families of all those who lost loved ones in Haiti. Our prayers are with you at this sad time.

In response to Haiti’s cry for help, the Caribbean is mobilizing to send assistance to those in need. The following snippets were taken from today’s headlines:

• CARICOM field hospital to help Haiti care for quake victims: Prime Minister Thompson stated that “We’ve decided that our response would be to provide what we call a field hospital, which all of us in CARICOM would contribute towards.”  (Taken from an article by Ricky Jordan, page 3, The Saturday Sun newspaper. http://www.nationnews.com/news/local/field-hospital-FRONT-PAGE-LEAD)

• LIME Caribbean sets up text line to help Haiti aid efforts: Lime Caribbean established a text line for its customers who wish to make donations…simply text the word “Haiti” to 4357(HELP) to make your donation. Each text costs BDS $5. The entire amount collected across the Caribbean will be donated to the relief effort. It was the 100th episode of HIMYM and after investing in 99 episodes, I thought I owed it to myself to watch the 100th. Which also meant that I could not watch Chuck. (Sunflower sad. Why do they make Sunflower choose.)

The title of the episode was “Girls vs. Suits”. So we almost definitely know that this episode is going to have in a whole lota Barney and….wait for it…he is probably going to have to decide between suits and …. girls.

New Radio Station Hitting the Air Waves

SLAM 101.1 FM

A new radio station has emerged onto the airwaves in Barbados and after listening to it for one (1) day, I will definitely return for more.

Slam is the name and they are streaming live on the internet. Actually as I am writing this article, I am listening to the station right now. It is after 8:00pm on Monday night and I do believe I hear the musical stylings of De Azam Boss (radio DJ Verseewild).

2009 Barbados Music Awards Photos

The glamour and the glitz was on show at the 2009 Barbados Music Awards. The location was the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.

I did not go. I stayed home, watched tv, pressed my clothes for work and played various games on Facebook. But others went and took photos and posted them on bajantube.com.

Edwin Yearwood was there, Rice was NOT

On the day of the Barbados Music Awards, I sighted Edwin Yearwood in the supermarket. He was in the Village Deli line engaged in conversation.

I don’t know what he was talking about as it was none of my business, but I do know that the Village Deli was out of rice to many people’s dismay.

   (MISSING.WANTED.LOVED.)

“Out of RICE?" That is like being out of macaroni pie!!! If you are running a food business in Barbados, serving cooked food to the masses, here are some things you should never run out of:

1. Macaroni pie
2. Rice
3. Chicken
4. Repeat 1 through 3, ad infinitum

If you find yourself running out of these things, by all means break it to the people gently or there may be a riot.
Needless to say, many people stupsed and some opted to wait the 15 minutes for the rice to cook.
Wait 15 minutes for rice to cook? I waited 2 seconds and bought something else. I hope everyone got their rice though. Within 15 minutes I was back in the parking lot. Bajans and rice on Sundays….it’s a bajan traditioooooon.

Fantasia is on The Island

Fantasia Burrino is in Barbados to perform at The Barbados Music Awards tonight (Sunday January 10th, 2010). She spoke at the fifth annual Turning Music Into Gold workshop, at the Hilton Barbados yesterday.
According to today’s The Barbados Advocate newspaper (page 10), Fantasia “shared her story about the hardships she had to endure especially when she transitioned into the music industry”. For more on the article click here ---> Burrino tells of hardships during workshop at Hilton.

I did not attend the workshop so I did not see Fantasia’s outfit in person, but I am not sure if I like the head scarf she was sporting. The headscarf photo can be found in the link above. What do you think, hit or miss?

Well, they got the equation right, so what went wrong? Don’t misunderstand me, I loved this movie. I loved watching Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.

My “Chocolate should be a Healthy Food Group” Petition – Day 1

Chocolate deserves to be a healthy food group. Why?

Look at it, it is so pretty, especially with friends (called walnuts and marshmallows). Case closed!!! Okay. maybe not just yet. Here are a good few reasons though.

Chocolate:

• Is delicious
• It comes in many shapes
• It comes in many colours
• It comes in many sizes
• Is delicious
• You can eat it
• You can drink it
• You can break off a piece (and share, or not)
• Is delicious
• Can be mixed with fruit and nuts. Now how healthy is that??!!!
• Is delicious
• Is delicious

So I am not finding too may reasons why chocolate should be a food group, but is is delicious. Does that not count for anything? All healthy food should be delicious and ergo, but faulty logic, all delicious food should be healthy. It is sooo straight forward.

This year I vowed to eat healthier, which means tampering my chocolate addiction. I will let you know how it goes.

New Year, New and Old Rules

Hi everyone,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

And my new year’s pledge number 100 (give or take), is to be a more consistent blogger. But you have to give a girl a chance – I’m still addicted to Facebook, and kicking the habit is NOT on my “to do” list. NO WAY – Facebook is way too important for me to let go.

So what is on my list of resolutions, you may ask?

If you must know (and might I say that is awful nosy of you), here goes:

1. Take care of my health – Yeah this is number one. I don't smoke nor nuthin’ but there is always some health issue to be taken care of.
2. Exercise more – Kinda goes along with number one. Isn’t this always on my list of resolutions? I am seeing a pattern emerge.
3. Eat healthier and at regular hours – I have to say healthier, cause I consider my eating habits to be fairly healthy, except for the chocolate. Come on….why is chocolate not a health food group?? This year I am going to start a petition to make this so (big up Star Trek).
4. Start a petition to make Chocolate a healthy food group. CHOCOLATE!!! 
5. Go out with friends more. And dance around in circles. (It is something girls like to do – don’t ask me why.)
6. Visit the godkids more.
7. Watch more movies!!!
8. Stop stressing – Why is this so low on the list? No wonder I forget it. STOP STRESSING!!!
9. Blog more – Kinda contradicts number 5 and 6; and number 2. I’ll work it out.
10. Be everything to everybody; NOT!!!
11. Search for Mr. Perfect Sunflower. He is out there, and I will find him.

Farmville Interrupts Blog

Yes folks, Farmville, that social networking game on Facebook which has one million players (as of this past weekend) has got me gripped by the keyboard. And I've been gripped for about two (2) months now.

Farmville.

I finally gave in to all those invites from friends to play this online game. Give a sunflower a break. Social networking pressure is real and alive on Facebook. I only started playing to help a friend get a bigger farm. (How much harm could there be in that??!!) Little did I know that I too would desire a bigger farm and would soon be begging my friends and family to be my neighbours.

Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio. I grieve for my pre-farmville life.

Now I have conversations which contain sentences like: "A sheep ended up in my hot-air balloon."

What?? That's preposterous. You don't own a hot-air balloon, well not in real life. Nor do you own a sheep, not that I know of. What also makes that statement nutty is that the sheep came in the air balloon. Duh!!!

Often I have conversations which go like: "I need a bigger farm", and "I got up at 3am to harvest."

To these poor "farmers" I say: "You need a what? A bigger farm? Of course you need a bigger farm!!! (Silly rabbit.) And I would not be getting up at 3am to harvest. 5am, Yes. 3am, Definately NOT!!"

Are we crazy? No. Is this game addictive? Yes. Addictive as H-E-L-L.

So if you don't want to spend countless hours on a virtual farm completing tasks at indecent hours that you wouldn't do if you had a real farm, then do not, I repeat, do not play Farmville.

Too bad it is so much fun. To get you started on your way to Farmville addiction, here is a nice little video by Zynga, the creators of Farmville, introducing you to the game.

Aint it nice how they say "plant and grow with friends"? Aint that precious?? Sounds all honkey dorey and lovey dovey and stuff.

Trust me, you want a bigger, better farm than all your friends, with lots of trees, and lots of animals and lots of crops . And you want it now!! (Ooops my Farmville angst is showing.)

The website says: Grow delicious fruits and vegetables and raise adorable animals on your very own farm! Does not say anything about setting your alarm so that you get up from your Sunday nap just to harvest 2 hour strawberries (or raspberries or whatever). Nor does it say anything about rushing home from work to harvest 1 day sunflowers so that you can plant more 1 day sunflowers because they are so darned profitable.

How many hours have you spent/wasted on Farmville?

Have you argued with someone recently over which is better, Farmville or Barn Buddy/Farmpals/Li'l Green Patch?

Who else needs Farmville rehab?? Show of hands. Darn, I lost count at nine hundred thousand.

Trust me, if we spent as much time and attention to our real lives as we do to Farmville, the world might not be in the economic turmoil that it is in right now. Why? Because in Farmville, if you need to buy a big ole farmhouse you got to plant the crops and make the money first. I guess there is a lesson in Farmville for all of us.

Batman and Lex Luther Need Money Too

Help a Superhero and Super-villain Out!!!

In a turn of fortunes which no one in their right mind would have foreseen, both Batman and Lex Luther are broke. Who would have guessed?

According to Adam West, Batman got scammed in a ponzi scheme (WOW, WHAM, Holy illegal ponzi scheme!!). Lex Luther on the other hand lost his money through irresponsible financing of his various plots to eradicate the world of Superman. Are we surprised? No, not really.
